Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
The Master of Ceremonies (MC) plays a pivotal role in the success of events, acting as the bridge between the audience and the event’s objectives. In Kano Municipal Local Government Area, Kano State, events such as cultural festivals, corporate gatherings, and religious ceremonies often draw diverse audiences with varying expectations and cultural backgrounds. The MC’s ability to engage, entertain, and manage such audiences is critical to ensuring the event's smooth flow and overall success. According to Abdullahi and Musa (2024), effective MCs possess excellent communication skills, cultural sensitivity, and the ability to adapt to different audience dynamics. However, engaging diverse audiences presents unique challenges, including language barriers, cultural differences, and varying levels of audience participation. This study examines the role of the MC in engaging diverse audiences in Kano, focusing on their strategies, challenges, and impact on event outcomes.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Engaging diverse audiences in events is a challenging task, particularly in multicultural settings like Kano Municipal. Despite the critical role of the MC, there is often a lack of formal training and guidelines to help them navigate audience diversity effectively. Challenges such as cultural insensitivity, poor communication, and audience disengagement can negatively impact the success of events. While previous studies have explored the general role of MCs, there is limited research on their specific strategies for engaging diverse audiences in Kano (Ahmed & Sule, 2023). This study seeks to address this gap by assessing the role of MCs in engaging diverse audiences in Kano Municipal Local Government Area.
